Trip to Newport & Nap Time Going Well

Last Friday I didn't work because my mom was gone and I had worked Monday instead. We were headed to Newport for the weekend with Rad & Jen, David & Yully, and Anthony & Tiffany, so I spent some time packing that morning and then Caleb took a pretty good nap before we left. The napping without a swaddle is going better than I thought it would and much better than other times I have tried it. I assumed that we would be transitioning to 1 nap a day since I thought it would take so long for Caleb to go to sleep on his own that there would not be time in the day for 2 naps. Well, we did that for a few days and now we are back to 2 naps a day because he is doing so well. He falls asleep pretty quickly for his morning nap and then takes awhile to go to sleep in the afternoon, but he is not fussing or anything, so I just leave him there and he eventually goes to sleep. I think it will just keep getting better and better the more we do it. I have to say that I feel like a big weight has been lifted, because I have been wanting to get him out of the swaddle for a long time, but just didn't think I had the patience to make the transition! Now if we could just get Caleb to walk!!

So, we left for Newport around 3:00 and met Steve at the bridge. We were the first ones to get to the timeshare, so we checked in and got settled and fed Caleb supper and gave him a bath before everyone else arrived. I then nursed Caleb and put him to bed while everyone else was getting supper ready and then we had a nice, late supper after Caleb was in bed.

We stayed up talking for awhile, which was nice. That is kind of what the weekend is all about, because Anthony and Tiffany will be moving to Puerto Rico in a few months, so we wanted to have a nice weekend together. The boys stayed up until 1:00, so it is nice they were able to have that time together to talk.

Sabbath morning Caleb was up at about 5:30, which is not too unusual. It was a little hard because we had to stay in our room so we didn't wake other people up. David & Yully were sleeping in a loft area right above the main room, so any noise down below would bother them. Luckily we had the master bedroom which was quite large, so Caleb had a nice area to move around in and play. We also brought his high chair into our room so we could feed him breakfast.

It took awhile for everybody to get up and around, which is understandable given the late bedtime and the fact that no one else has a 1-year old that was up at 5:30. Caleb seemed tired around 9:30 and so was Steve, so Steve tried to get him to take a nap and then he was going to take a nap. I wasn't sure how the no swaddle would go in a new environment. He actually fell asleep pretty good, but didn't stay asleep for long (35 minutes or so), so Steve wasn't really able to nap. And that turned out to be Caleb's only nap of the day, so that wasn't too good, but oh well.

After everyone was up and around, we watched a Doug Batchelor sermon and sat around talking.

Then we had a nice lunch of haystacks (the classic group meal) and Jen made brownies. After lunch, we got ready to head out to the Cliff Walk, which is a beautiful walk with the ocean on one side and the mansions on the other side. Unfortunately, a big portion of it has been closed since Hurricane Sandy did some damage, but it will be repaired and reopened by summer, so that will be good. We still walked a couple of miles and had a nice time.

After the Cliff Walk, we drove around and looked at the nice houses, and I was hoping Caleb would go to sleep, but not a chance! I then tried to get him to take a nap back at the timeshare but I think he was too tired and wouldn't settle down, so I just gave up. I fed him supper and then put him to bed. While I was feeding him, most everybody else went out into the town to get some supper and bring it back so we could all eat together. Then we had a nice evening playing Mafia and Monopoly Deal and then called it a night.

On Sunday morning, everyone just got up and left fairly early to get on with their day at home. I think we got home around 10:30 and then we unpacked and I worked for a little while and then put Caleb down for a nap around noon. It took him a little while to go to sleep but then he slept for about an hour and a half, so that was good. Then we went to a funeral at our church that took up most of the rest of our day. We didn't get back until close to 5:00 and then we fed Caleb supper and got him ready for bed.

On Monday morning, Caleb woke up around 5:00, so that's when we went back to 2 naps a day, because I couldn't justify keeping him awake until 12:00, just so he would fall asleep faster. I wasn't sure how he would do going to sleep earlier, but I was pleasantly surprised that it only took him about 15 minutes to fall asleep on his own, so I was really happy! After he got up, we went to Trader Joe's to get some groceries for the week. When he was in the car seat, Caleb used to just unvelcro his shoes, but now he takes his shoes completely off and this time, he took one sock off as well, and I looked back there and he had his foot in his mouth. Oh well.

Monday afternoon the nap didn't go as well, but right now since he is still learning, I am just happy that he is actually falling asleep.

On Tuesday, Caleb was up at 5:00 again, and I am not sure why! So, we did another morning nap and he did great and fell asleep in about 10 minutes. Then we went to our play group and had a good time. I also went through Caleb's 18-24 month clothes on Tuesday because there is another big consignment sale coming up and I wanted to see if I needed anything in that next size. I am excited because Alison and Shannon are going to come down to go to the consignment sale, so that will be a lot of fun!

Yesterday I had no babysitter because my mom was gone, so I stayed home in the morning and then I brought Caleb to Steve's work on my way to work and Steve came home with Caleb in the afternoon.

All ready to go see Daddy

Well, I guess that's about it. It wasn't a super exciting week! Here is one more picture of my big boy!

  1. All three of my kids dropped the second nap when they were fifteen months old. So we'll see how things progress with Caleb! Glad the no-swaddle thing is working out for you.

  2. Wes has been trying to drop his 2nd nap too! I didn't take one for about a week, but then has been again the last few days...but he is teething too...so who knows! Looks like a fun trip to Newport! Love it there!

  3. Of course I meant "Wes" didn't take a nap for a week...not myself!! (= A nap would be nice, though!!! I definitely wouldn't be trying to drop it!
